Dogs Symptoms and Canine Health - Dog Cataracts - General Canine Observations
When you are worried about your pet dogs or puppies it is wise to make general observations and a note of your dog's general well-being before considering a health issue and problem such as Dog Cataracts. Overall physical condition? Mental attitude? Appetite? Condition of bowels and urinary apparatus? The nose of healthy dogs or puppies is moist and cool but in sick dogs it is usually hot and dry. Hair loss? Dry skin? Discharges? These general observations are useful to consider whilst checking out the symptoms of Dog Cataracts.

Cataracts can occur for a variety of reasons:

Trauma - Physical damage to the eye such as penetration from a thorn or air gun pellet for example can cause damage to the lens and result in the formation of a cataract. Cataracts caused by eye trauma usually occur in one eye and they can be treated very successfully with surgical removal.

Congenital Cataracts - These cataracts are present at birth and usually occur in both eyes. Congenital cataracts found in Miniature Schnauzers are usually inherited but this is not the norm with other breeds. This type of cataract is usually caused by an in uterus infection which damages the developing puppies eye.

Developmental Cataracts - These occur in young dogs and can either be inherited or as a result of trauma, diabetes or infection. Afghan Hounds and Standard Poodles are more prone to inherited cataracts.

Senile Cataracts - This type of cataract is found in dogs over six years of age. They are much less common in dogs than humans.

Inherited cataracts - If a dog is diagnosed with inherited cataracts, the dog should not be used for breeding because of the chance of passing the condition to its offspring.

Diabetes Mellitus - Cataracts are extremely common in diabetic dogs and form as the glucose concentrations in the lens increase. Sorbitol is formed from the extra glucose and this in turn causes an increase in the influx of water to the lens. This water increase causes the lens fibres to breakdown and cataract to form. Cataracts can affect both eyes in diabetic dogs so it is vital they are examined on a regular basis.

The remedies and treatment of Dog Cataracts may include the treatment of dogs as follows. Treatment for canine cataracts involves surgical removal of the lens. This procedure is becoming more common and as in humans has an extremely high success rate in dogs. There are several different methods for removal of the damaged lens:

- Removal of the entire lens and surrounding capsule
- Removal of the lens leaving the surrounding capsule
- Phacoemulsification of the lens (An ultra sonic device is used to break up the lens)
- Aspiration and desiccation of the lens

Not all animals are suitable for surgery and any other medical conditions that the dog is suffering from needs to be taken into account. An aggressive animal that will make daily treatment (usually eye drops before and after surgery) difficult or elderly and possibly diabetic animals may not be suitable for surgery. It is important to discuss the procedure fully with your ophthalmologist or veterinary surgeon to decide on the best course of treatment for your dog.
